Music Never Stopped

Hadley Price

Imagine walking into a room in 1976 and finding a young musician sitting at an acoustic piano, a pencil beside a few sheets of handwritten music. He's working on a song, playing a few notes, writing something down, and trying another chord.

But something interesting is happening inside his head. While his fingers are playing the piano, he's hearing much more than a piano. Guitars, strings, drums, bass lines, and vocal harmonies are all coming together in his imagination. He's hearing an entire musical arrangement, several instruments playing simultaneously, even though the only sound anyone else can hear is that acoustic piano.

Now imagine telling him that fifty years later, he could bring those sounds out of his imagination and hear them performed together in a finished recording, right from his own home. Better yet, he'd be collaborating with a songwriter halfway around the world in Australia, turning handwritten lyrics into complete musical productions. He'd probably think you'd lost your mind.

That young musician was me. And although the world around me has changed dramatically, the music I've always heard in my imagination has never gone away.

Music was already an important part of my life long before that piano scene. In high school, I was recognized in Who's Who Among Music Students, and in 1976, I performed as lead tenor with the Trevadors Quartet, a Nashville-based group that traveled and performed across a dozen states. Those experiences gave me a musical foundation that has stayed with me throughout my life.

When Music and Technology Came Together

Music wasn't my only fascination growing up. I was equally curious about electronics, computers, and the remarkable possibilities of communications technology.

As a young man, I felt drawn west, toward the Pacific Northwest. By the early 1980s, the computer industry was beginning to blossom, and I was fascinated by the opportunities taking shape. That journey would eventually inspire one of my songs, West of the North Star, a reflection on heading west, following your curiosity, and discovering where life might take you.

My interest in technology grew into a career spanning more than forty years. I founded two companies, 101 Computer Center and West Connect, Inc., building computers, developing networking solutions, and helping people discover the possibilities of an increasingly connected world.

In the mid-1990s, West Connect became one of the early internet service providers (ISPs) in the United States. Both companies were acquired by Opus Interactive in 2003.

What fascinated me most wasn't simply the technology. It was discovering what people could accomplish with it.

Today, those two lifelong interests have come together. I can develop musical arrangements, experiment with instruments and harmonies, and produce finished recordings that capture sounds I once could only imagine. And the same communications technology I spent decades working with now allows me to collaborate with creative people almost anywhere in the world.

Meet Darcy Rae

Of all places, I met an Australian songwriter named Andre Smith in a Facebook group chat. Andre records under the name Darcy Rae, and what began as a simple online conversation has grown into a wonderful creative partnership.

Here's where the story gets interesting.

Andre has a collection of original country music lyrics he wrote back in the 1990s. Not computer files or professionally printed manuscripts, but actual handwritten pages, some written on ordinary legal pads in 1996, 1997, and 1998.

He photographs those pages and sends them to me here in Florida. I study the lyrics, develop the musical arrangements, and produce the recordings. Words that have existed only on paper for nearly thirty years are finally becoming songs you can actually hear.

One of those compositions, The Storm, was written in 1996. Now, almost three decades later, those handwritten words have become a finished recording.

There's something wonderfully satisfying about that process. A songwriter in Australia sends me a photograph of an old handwritten page, and together we turn it into music.

And to think, it all started with a conversation on Facebook.

Music Without Boundaries

While Darcy Rae's music is rooted in country, my own musical interests have never been limited to one style. I enjoy creating pop, rock, country, gospel, contemporary choral arrangements, and more experimental compositions. Sometimes the most interesting results come from combining styles that wouldn't ordinarily be heard together.

A few heartfelt lines might become a country ballad with acoustic guitar and gentle harmonies. Those same words could inspire a driving rock arrangement or find their voice through a rich, three-part choral performance. Each approach brings something different to the music, and discovering the right direction is part of the creative adventure.

Through HadleyPrice.com, I share my original compositions and projects like my collaboration with Darcy Rae. I also enjoy working with songwriters and other creative people who want to turn their musical ideas into finished recordings.

Perhaps you have lyrics you've never heard performed, a melody that needs instrumentation, or a composition that could benefit from a fresh arrangement. I can help develop the musical direction, instrumentation, and harmonies, bringing those ideas together in a finished production.

You don't need to arrive with a completed song. Sometimes a few handwritten lines are enough to begin.

And after fifty years of making music, that's still one of the things I enjoy most. Discovering what a musical idea can become.

The music never stopped. Only the world around it changed.

Thanks for joining me for another chapter of my journey. You can explore my music, read blogs, listen to the recordings of Darcy Rae, or contact me about developing your own musical ideas at HadleyPrice.com.
